It is also true that children coming from divorced homes are at increased risk in their own future relationships. In addition, the economic consequences are hard on the children. On the other hand, the idea of staying together for the sake of the children has lost validity in America. The effects on children may be immediately negative, but the long-term effects are mixed. Children are better off out of the home when conflicting parents are abusive. If the divorce promotes parental happiness, children should also benefit.
