Imagine you repeat this experiment with a Mylar balloon (the shiny metallic-looking ones that are filled with helium and tend to last a long time). Predict what you think will happen and explain the basis for your prediction.

The volume is less than one would expect simply by adding the two individual volumes.

Answer to Question 2

I think we might not be able to smell the peppermint. The reason I think this is that Mylar balloons usually last longer than the regular balloons (i.e. the air stays in them longer) so we might assume that the sub-microscopic holes in the Mylar are smaller, maybe so small that the peppermint particles can't escape. Note: Try it out in class or encourage them to try it on their own and report back.
