Answer to Question 1

a

Answer to Question 2

Moral and religious leaders teach us that we should extend kindness to everyone, but in fact, most people tend to be more generous toward those they see as similar to themselves. For example, if you watch someone who is feeling socially rejected by others, you will feel the pain and your brain will react accordingly, but you will react more strongly if the person feeling rejected is one of your relatives or close friends. From an evolutionary standpoint, it makes sense to be altruistic toward your relatives, and someone who seems similar is more likely to be related to you than someone very different. However, the strength of this in-group bias varies among individuals. Most people show brain responses that differ in several ways between viewing faces of their own race versus faces of another race, but the difference is greater in people with a strong bias toward their own race.
