Answer to Question 1

ANSWER: Because the preschool period is a critical time for the development of fundamental motor skills, the adult who works with young children should be alert to each childs developmental progress in order to assess how well each child is doing. It is important for young children to be engaged in informal teacher-planned and teacher-directed motor activities to ensure that all children have the opportunity to develop fundamental skills. Teachers of young children need to be skilled at assessment of childrens motor skill development, using checklist observations of motor activities during play, standardized measures, and considering cultural background when using assessments to inform decisions concerning school readiness.

Answer to Question 2

ANSWER: Both indoors and outdoors there are numerous safety hazards for young children. Indoor hazards include being safe in the kitchen, being safe with dogs, fire safety, gun safety, food safety, and others. Outdoor hazards include bike safety, street smarts, farm and camping safety, fireworks, sports injuries and others. Food safety and dog safety are major concerns. Adults are responsible for providing young children with an environment that is safe from hazards that may cause illness or injury. Adults also must provide proper supervision of childrens activities to prevent unintentional injuries.
