Answer to Question 1

Literary quality does have an element of subjectivity to it. It is possible that a book of little interest to children may receive an award due to its technical merits. Also, the book might not be appealing to children of all ages and interests. Finally, only a few books are chosen for the awards each year. There are a great many other fine works that do not receive awards. Using only Caldecott Medal winning books is too narrow a scope for choosing books. Other factors, such as the interests of the children, must be considered. There are many other awards for childrens books that can also be used as a reference for helping select multicultural and more narrowly targeted books.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
