Answer to Question 1

This statement can generally be refuted. Such children are quite aware of what is happening in their families and in the world. They are exposed to information from television and often see social problems in their neighborhoods. They see the worry, fear, and anxiety that death, divorce, drugs, disease, terrorism, unemployment, and war can cause for adults. When they are isolated from discussions about these things that they know exist, they can begin to feel hurt and excluded. Of course, care should always be taken when discussing these issues with young children.
