Answer to Question 1

An avoidant, insecurely attached child will be uncomfortable in new situations, but will ignore his mother and will have little regard for others. This child already feels there is no one there for him and that he cannot rely on adults to meet his needs. He doesn't recognize his own need for interpersonal connection and contact. This child is likely to have a parent who avoids contact, doesn't notice the child's needs, and basically rejects the child.

Answer to Question 2

Self-esteem in a child is the product of a mentally healthy environment. When a child has a sense of self-esteem, the child feels both lovable and capable, is secure and independent, and takes on new challenges. The child can handle his or her feelings, both positive and negative. A child's self-esteem evolves primarily through the quality of relationships with people.
