Answer to Question 1

A child with a spirited or difficult temperament is probably going to be the most challenging child to work with and also the one who may be most at risk of poor mental health and emotional well-being because he or she is not easily adaptable and is very intense. The spirited childis not easily approachable and is wary of strangers. This child is very distractible and tends to have irregular rhythms. He or she is highly sensitive, highly active, negative, and easily frustrated. Children with spirited temperamentshave been found to exhibit more behavior problems when in low-quality child care.

Answer to Question 2

A child who is emotionally healthy is one who can take cues from words, his or her own inner voice, and watching others, and learn to interpret these cues. Infants and toddlers may not have this capacity yet. During infancy and to age three years a child is learning to experience life, express emotions, and form relationships. Very young children are learning to explore and master their environment. When they are met with positive responses and develop secure reciprocal relationships within multiple contexts, these children develop good mental health and emotional well-being. Early experiences shape a child's brain, which can have either a positive or negative effect on the child's development. If there is a negative circumstance or other factor to consider, these very young children may be a risk for problems in social and emotional development.
