Answer to Question 1

If a child in a family child care center program or elementary school is without immunizations, for whatever reason, and that child becomes exposed to an infectious disease, he or she may be excluded until the incubation period has ended and it is established that the childdoes not have the disease. This exclusion is important because it has been found that unimmunized children are as much as 35 times more likely to catch diseases such as measles than those children who have had proper immunizations.

Answer to Question 2

A number of infectious diseases must be reported to the local health department so they can track the disease for patterns of outbreak. This helps to prevent the spread of infectious illnesses in the community. The types of disease typically requiring reporting are those that can spread rapidly and may cause serious illness.
