Instruments for young children must meet the following guidelines:
1.They should be sturdy and durable
2.They should be fairly easy to learn to play
3.They should be safe with no sharp edges.
4.They should be inexpensive.

Some appropriate tonal instruments include:
 Infants: chimes and xylophone
 Toddlers: Add the electronic keyboard and piano
 Preschool: Add the autoharp, thumb piano, simple ukulele, hand bells
 Kindergarten and primary: Add penny whistle, and recorder.
