Characteristics of attentive listening include: maintaining eye contact; giving relevant nonverbal gestures such as nodding and appropriate touch; giving relevant verbal responses to draw out and encourage the child to continue; and waiting patiently for the child to complete what he or she is saying without rushing the child or trying to finish the child's sentences.
