Different cultures approach learning differently. Some cultures approach learning, and educators, with a feeling close to reverence. Learning and knowledge is something that you accept humbly. A professor, teacher, parent, or some other wise elder from the community should be consulted if
you want to receive knowledge. The learner could not possibly be presumed to create knowledge. As we know, throughout history a great deal of knowledge has been passed down to younger generations by wise elder generations. Other cultures approach learning in a radically different way. Just because everyone always believed something was true doesn't convince them at all that it is really true. If they want to know something, they do research, hold a focus group, or put together a think tank. They believe that learning is something to construct. Developmentally appropriate practice teaches us that children really do have to learn how to construct knowledge or they will be left in the lurch as they grow up in this fast-moving technological world. We must, however, still recognize the cultural importance of revering wise elders and respecting community traditions.
