Answer to Question 1

Ca++ entry into terminal causes release of neurotransmitter (NT) molecules, primarily from vesicles, into cleft. NT passively diffuses across cleft and binds to post-synaptic receptors to induce either IPSP or EPSP, depending upon the type of ion flow into or out of post-synaptic neuron. The NT then dissociates from the receptors and may undergo reuptake back into the axon terminal or nearby glial cells, be enzymatically inactivated, or diffuse throughout the extracellular fluid.
