Because casinos primarily attract a leisure clientele, the industry is highly sensitive to the business cycle. Leisure activities, like other non-necessities, are a postponable consumption activity. Only gambling addicts would not be deterred by adverse economic conditions.

On the other hand, not much attention was paid to reservations systems until those systems began to be overwhelmed by the weight of the bookings that could not be handled by the primitive methods in place. American Airlines with the IBM Corporation pioneered the development of automated systems.
