Key indicators of similarities and differences include: types of projects/initiatives; sources and uses of funding; geographic focus (e.g., local, regional, or international); and tourism as a primary or secondary vehicle for achieving sustainability.

Service industries are different than goods or merchandise-producing industries because the products are not tangible (cannot be touched or held). Travel and tourism is a service industry and belongs with others including transportation, communication, information technology, financial services, health services, entertainment, media, etc. All of the service sectors account for 70 of GDP and 80 of all jobs in the United States.
