Answer 1

Suggest that students do some Internet research to learn about the dangers of coal mining and the conditions under which miners worked. Students should also consider whether or not Congress was justified in passing laws that allowed the government to take over industries in case of strikes. Ask students to determine what conditions justified strikes and which justified government action.

Answer 2

Most students will quickly point to Rosie the Riveter and the WACs. These are certainly good places to start. Record numbers of women were able to find industrial employment, and breaking with tradition, the armed forces expanded the breadth of positions that women were allowed to hold. But stronger students will recognize that most women neither took industrial jobs nor joined the military. They will point to the V-girls, the flood of families moving to industrial cities, and the rise in marriage and divorce rates.
