Answer 1

d

Answer 2

ANSWER: Students should recognize that colonists used a variety of strategies. Virginia and
Massachusetts paid little regard to Indian land rights, particularly as the populations rose, putting stress on the already settled areas. Massachusetts used Indian allies in their war against the Pequot and then betrayed them. Governor Berkeley of Virginia did oppose making war for Indian land in the 1670s, but much of Virginia's early history reflects bitter conflict with Indians, particularly after the Good Friday massacre in 1622, during which the Powhatans killed 25 of the English colonists in a single day. In contrast, the Plymouth settlers and Quakers bought land from Indians in hopes of obtaining a peaceful coexistence. Stronger students should note that the Plymouth settlers were not pacifists and sided with their Indian neighbors in wars against their Indian enemies.

This is partially backed up by the fact that early grandfather clocks displayed IIII for the number 4 instead of IV. Early clockmakers apparently thought that the IIII balanced out the VIII (used for the number 8) on the clock face and that it just looked better.
