Depressive disorders occur at equal rates in boys and girls in childhood; however, more adolescent girls (twice as many) are diagnosed with depression than adolescent boys
 Risk factors include:
o History of sexual abuse which occurs more often in girls
o Differences in how girls view changes related to puberty
o Girls tend to have greater need for approval for approval and success and lower levels of positive thinking
o Cognitive vulnerability-stress: girls have great cognitive vulnerability coupled with greater stressors in adolescence
o Sexual activity and substance use may affect girls in different ways than boys
