Question 1

Which reasoning process is shown in the following example?

If Mary goes to the mall, she gets ice cream. Mary did not get ice cream. We conclude Mary did not go to the mall.
◦ inductive reasoning
◦ deductive reasoning
◦ reasoning by counterexample
◦ theoretical reasoning

Question 2

The problem describes procedures that are to be applied to numbers. Represent the original number as n and use deductive reasoning to prove a conjecture that relates the result of the process to the number n.

Select a number. Multiply the number by 32. Add 32 to the product. Divide this sum by 16.  Subtract two from the quotient.
- 2 = 2n + 2 - 2 = 2n
- 1 = n + 1 - 1 = n
- 2 = 2n + 1 - 2 = 2n - 1
- 2 = n + 1 - 2 = n - 1
