 Helps in understanding whether a particular behavior will resolve itself over time and therefore shouldn't be treated
 Enhances understanding whether a particular behavior is significantly deviant from same-aged peers and therefore should be treated
 Enhances the understanding of what could/should be expected of a child of a particular age; treatment is therefore focused on reestablishing a child to a typical sequence of development
