Answer to Question 1

Borderline personality disorder includes erratic and impulsive behaviors that can be selfdestructive. These include reckless driving, binges of gambling, drinking, and sex, as well
as self-mutilation and suicidal behavior. Self-mutilation is one of the most discriminating
signs of borderline and is sometimes associated with relief from anxiety and other negative
emotions. Suicidal behavior is also common and, while suicide attempts may be motivated
a desire to manipulate, it is estimated that as many as 8 percent may complete a suicide.
