Unlike the "old" immigrants, who arrived prior to 1876 and lived in geographically dispersed residence patterns, the "new" immigrants, from 1876-1925, tended to live in the industrial cities of the Northeast and Midwest because
◦ those were the places with jobs available and their chances of success were greatest.
◦ laws were passed prohibiting them from living elsewhere.
◦ they were new to the country and did not realize that the greatest economic opportunity was in the West.
◦ they had always lived in cities in their countries of origin so that was all that they knew.
