What is the purpose of the 3'-to-5' exonuclease activity of DNA Polymerase?
◦ Some polymerases do not have exonuclease activity.
◦ Remove mismatched nucleotides in the newly synthesized strand.
◦ Degrade excessive nucleotides on Okazaki fragments.
◦ Remove mismatched nucleotides in the template strand.
◦ Removing mismatched nucleotides at the polymerase active site increases the rate of synthesis in the 5' to 3' direction.
