Answer to Question 1

Certain foods contain more beneficial properties than others. These foods are known as functional foods. Choosing to consume more functional foods over conventional foods is based on the idea that functional foods have added health benefits beyond their nutritional value. Although the United States through its regulatory agency the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not officially recognize the category of functional foods, this categorical label is recognized in Canada, Europe, and Japan. This concept of food as medicine is not novel. In fact, the founder of medicine Hippocrates advised over 2500 years ago to let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food..

Answer to Question 2

The body loses about 20 to 30 grams of protein each day through a process known as remodeling or obligatory degradation of protein and must therefore replace it through foods ingested. In order to prevent an overall loss of protein from the body, we need to consume a minimum of at least 20 to 30 grams of protein daily from food. Overall, this is a small amount of our total caloric intake, but we should consume more than this to be safe.
