Answer to Question 1

Surprising to some, clerical and secretarial work are highly stressful occupations. In fact, results from the seminal prospective Framingham Heart Study indicated that coronary heart disease rates were nearly twice as high among women clerical workers as homemakers (Haynes & Feinleib, 1980). Compared to academic and sales work, clerical work rates the highest in work overload and perceived lack of control (Narayanan et al., 1999).

Answer to Question 2

The term job strain is used in the job demands-control model and other organizational stress contexts to refer to harmful consequences that result from exposure to job stressors There may be emotion-related strains (e.g., frustration, anger, and anxiety), physiological-related strains (e.g., cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, or musculoskeletal problems), and job-related strains (e.g., low motivation, low satisfaction, and absenteeism).
