Answer to Question 1

If the person is smiling, it is likely to be a Duchenne smile, a genuine smile that is characterized by the skin crinkling around the corners of the eyes (i.e., forming crow's feet). Unlike polite smiles, Duchenne smiles are hard to fake because they involve involuntary muscles of the face.

Answer to Question 2

Although there may be cultural differences in the display of emotions, Ekman (1993) and others (Elfenbein & Ambady, 2002) have determined that facial displays of the six emotions of anger, fear, disgust, happiness, surprise, and sadness have universal characteristics that are easily decoded regardless of the culture of the observer.
