Answer to Question 1

The prospective research design has a stronger though logistically more costly and difficult strategy. Also known as a longitudinal design, it is a study in which research participants are evaluated from day one of the research project on certain variables and then tracked across a fixed time period from baseline.

Answer to Question 2

Those who adopt the sick role exhibit patterns of behavior referred to as illness behavior in which they evaluate symptoms, seek medical care, and ask for support from close others. Illness behavior is reinforced in this manner by those who find the additional attention, care, and relaxation of the demands of their normal duties rewarding.

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
