Although women can assume a variety of positions during childbirth, the dominant position in Westernized countries is the semi-reclined position with a woman's feet up in stirrups (DeJonge et al., 2008). Some feminist health professionals claim that this position is easier for the doctor than for the pregnant woman and that it is the most ineffective and dangerous position for labor.
