Racial discrimination probably figured in the long term background of poverty that Karla
came from, but this narrative does not address it directly in relation to her situation. On
the other hand, the Arnstrongs were clearly the victims of prejudice in housing and
probably in employment. Mark had difficulty getting a good mob in spit of his good
record and skills. They were overcharged and denied ownership of the house they lived
in. It would be difficult to understand either gender or race bias from these narratives.
