Answer to Question 1

D

Answer to Question 2

Arranged marriage systems ensure that all eligible persons are mated in an orderly process,
which protects traditional customs and respects the social and economic status of the
respective families. It is a very low stress system for the couple, as parents or a designated
manager arranges the process. Courtship is shorter, premarital sex is infrequent, and there is a
pragmatic recognition and commitment by both families. Affection usually does develop
between couples, but is not essential. Since the process is rational based, divorce is rare.
Some unmarried persons find the arranged marriage a preferred system.
In personal choice systems, mate selection is both an enjoyable and a trying experience. Not
all persons succeed in choosing and acquiring a mate. Dating attractiveness is often based
upon physical appearance or personality, which can limit the attractability of some persons. If
persons do not succeed in enticing a mate, they may remain unmarried. The length of the
Personals column in newspapers reflects the dimension of this condition.
When marriage is affection based, the union may atrophy if affection deteriorates. The high
rate of divorce in westernized cultures reflects this trend.
