Answer to Question 1

Answer:
Shifting standards occurs when we use one group as the standard by which to make comparisons and shift to another comparison standard when judging members of a different group.

Examples will vary. Elements of a successful example should include members of two different groups (e.g., men vs. women) engaged in the same behavior that is expected to be different for the two groups in terms of absolute performance. In the example, performance should be shown to be judged within-group instead of globally (e.g., pretty good for a girl or not bad for a man). Excellent answers will point out that such distinctions may not be made overtly in terms of verbal responses, but may impact subsequent behavior of the person making the judgment.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: contact hypothesis
