Downward social comparisons occur when we compare ourselves to less capable others. This type of social comparison usually boosts self-esteem. Upward social comparisons occur when we compare ourselves to more capable others. This type of social comparison can be somewhat damaging to our self-esteem. We make social comparisons when we do not have, or choose not to use, an objective measure to apply to ourselves.
