Answer to Question 1

Answer: Before the seventeenth century, the Iroquois were hunters, and lived in peace with other northeastern tribes. In the seventeenth century, the European fur trade in America forced the Iroquois into direct competition with the neighboring Hurons. Because furs could be traded for valuable manufactured goods, the Hurons and Iroquois competed for business with the fur traders. After a series of skirmishes between the two tribes, the Iroquois changed from peaceful hunters to fierce warriors. This historical example points to the power of competition for scarce resources to increase human aggression.
