Answer to Question 1

Students should clearly define postpartum depression as a sense of inadequacy
and sadness following the birth of a baby. Routine care of the baby becomes
overwhelming and the mother may feel like neglecting or abusing the baby. Causes
include preexisting depression, financial difficulties, marital stress, hormonal
changes, and cultural practices. Support from the father can help the mother cope,
and medical treatment should be sought if the depression lasts beyond a few
weeks.

Answer to Question 2

Supporting drinking, some fetuses are exposed to alcohol but unharmed by it.
Others may be harmed if a genetic vulnerability exists. Opposing drinking, it's
exceedingly difficult to know how much alcohol may be too much since it is
dose-related. Even relatively small amounts may cause fetal alcohol effects. Fetal
alcohol syndrome and fetal alcohol effects may be prevented by abstinence.
Students should show support for argument, whatever side they choose.
