Gender plays a significant role in the intimacy levels of the elderly and their grown children. Women, for example, tend to express greater emotional intensity than do men in their intergenerational ties. Subsequently, elderly mothers and their adult daughters and daughters-in- law experience greater intimacy than do fathers and sons.
