Cognitive avoidance or denial is an attempt to deny the seriousness of the situation, saying, for example, There is a mistake in the test results-the doctor will repeat the tests and find his mistake. He/she isn't cheating on me-I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation as to why they were together.
