Answer to Question 1

According to Erikson and others, the primary goal of adolescence is to answer the question Who am I? Erikson described the identity search as one that involves exploration and commitment. An adolescent who is exploring their identity is actively engaged in the Who am I? question. Commitment means that a decision has been made about how to answer that question. Marcia expanded on this by looking at exploration and commitment as end points of two dimensions. Where one falls on these two dimensions (the particular combination), determines one's identity status. The goal is identity achievement. This involves an active exploration (pursuing an answer to the Who am I? question) and a commitment (a decision) regarding the answer to that question. When one has answered the Who am I? question (such as, I am meant to be a teacher.), Erikson refers to this as ego identity.
