Answer to Question 1

Although there are various theories about social and emotional development during middle childhood, there are common themes. These themes include: (1) the development of skills, (2) the importance of interpersonal relationships, and (3) the expansion of self-understanding. Freud viewed middle childhood as a period of latency. The sexual feelings of childhood are repressed, and this allows the child to focus on developing intellectual, social and cultural skills. Erikson looked at the middle childhood years as a time of acquiring cognitive and social skills. Children who master this stage feel industrious while those who do not experience feelings of inferiority. Piaget focused on the stage of concrete operations. The child becomes less egocentric, which allows the child to take the perspective of others.

There are major differences in the metabolism of morphine and the illegal drug heroin. Morphine mostly produces its CNS effects through m-receptors, and at k- and d-receptors. Heroin has a slight affinity for opiate receptors. Most of its actions are due to metabolism to active metabolites (6-acetylmorphine, morphine, and morphine-6-glucuronide).
