Explain two reasons a poor stage-environment fit may result in temporary declines in school achievement in the transition from elementary school to middle school.

Answer to Question 1

Answer: Young adolescents expect to have more autonomy and control but middle school teachers often give them less control. In addition, young adolescents place importance on personal relationships with teachers but the middle school environment can often be more impersonal.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Recent immigrants are more likely to value doing well in school and expect to work hard in school.
