Answer to Question 1

She should know that the most important thing to do is to continue to make her daughter feel loved and secure. Having a secure attachment to a parent prior to the arrival of a new sibling can help mitigate sibling rivalry. Although a new baby can disrupt routines, the more she can maintain normal routines, the less disconcerted her daughter will feel. Setting aside time to respond to her daughter sensitively and warmly will help support the existing secure attachment and reduce feelings of rivalry. Finally, she should try to let her daughter help with the new baby in a variety of ways. As her daughter learns to think in terms of her baby sibling's needs and assist in meeting them, it will promote better sibling relationships.
