Answer to Question 1

Women are more likely than men to have discontinuous work histories, have fewer financial resources, and spend less time planning their retirement. Women who raise children and care for the home do not have their own pensions or other sources of income in retirement. African American older adults are likely to continue working beyond age 65 . However, there are no ethnic-based differences in health outcomes between African American women and men following retirement. Individuals' adjustment to retirement evolves over time as a result of complex interrelations involving physical health, financial status, the degree to which their retirement was voluntary, and feelings of personal control. As long as people have financial security, health, a supportive network of relatives and friends, and an internally driven sense of motivation, they report feeling very good about being retired.
