Answer to Question 2

The stress and coping paradigm is a framework that views stress not as an environmental stimulus or as a response, but as the interaction of a thinking person and an event. Coping and appraisals affect how a person perceives and responds to stress. Coping is an attempt to deal with stressful events and is seen as a dynamic, evolving process that is fine-tuned over time. In general, there are two types of coping: problem-focused coping (attempting to tackle a problem head-on) and emotion-focused coping (dealing with one's feelings about a stressful event). Appraisal affects how we view stressors and stress. There are three types of appraisals of stress: Primary appraisal (categorizing events as irrelevant, positive, or stressful), secondary appraisal (evaluating perceived ability to cope with the stresss), and reappraisal (making a new primary or secondary appraisal resulting from changes in the situation).

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
