Answer to Question 1

The three meanings are to convey emotion such as anger and aggression, to indicate sexual interest, or to signal the beginning and end of conversations.

Answer to Question 2

From the structural-functionalist perspective, the manifest functions of divorce allow new stability to families by creating healthier and less stressful environments. High divorce rates will have an impact on other institutions, such as the law, schools, and the health care system. The latent functions of divorce include increasing the self-esteem of those who leave an unhealthy marriage. Also, other aspects of society can be positively affected. The student should discuss these functions and give examples of each type.
