Answer to Question 1

The student should indicate that early television portrayals of families were not realistic; since the 1990s, these portrayals have become increasingly edgy and dysfunctional. TV shows like The Osbournes, Family Guy, and The Sopranos present unorthodox family values. Additionally, children are underrepresented, and life on TV is usually one of ceaseless prosperity. Programs like Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire and The Bachelor have diminished the sacredness of marriage. The dysfunctional family has long been the subject of films (The Godfather and My Big Fat Greek Wedding). Books on marriage abound with topics from successful weddings to marital happiness. The student's discussion should include how he/she thinks these portrayals will influence real families and marriages.
