The student should assert that according to psychologist Suzanne Kobasa, hardiness is a combination of three personality traits: commitment, control, and challenge. All of these help protect us from the harmful effects of stress and reduce our chance of developing illness. People who are committed have high self-esteem. People who believe they have control over their lives can make changes to reduce stress. People who perceive a challenge can be overcome have good coping mechanisms.
