Answer to Question 1

Birth rates among women in their 30s and 40s increased steadily from 1975 to 1990. Each of those years had approximately a 3 percent increase. This trend appears to be continuing into the twenty-first century. In 2004, births to older women were on the rise. Among women aged 30 to 34, for example, the birth rate was 95.5; among women aged 35 to 39, the birth rate was 45.4; and among women in their 40s, the birth rate was 9.0

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
