2. The plates are colored blue and white, which can carry multiple meanings (the traditional color of Chinese porcelain, the color associated with the Virgin Mary, the association with the mood characterized as blue, etc.)
3. The artist wished to draw attention to the number of individuals executed each year according to the American death penalty laws by state. The work of art is ongoing and thus plates are added continuously.
4. The artist wished to draw attention to the humanity and complexity of the inmates as individuals.
