Although the making of art is typically an individual effort, the production of a Japanese woodblock print was a team effort. Discuss how the team players worked together.

Answer: The ideal answer should include:
1. The team included the publisher, the artist/designer, the carver, and the printer.
2. The publisher was the head of the project. He often conceived the ideas for the prints and provided financing.
3. Workers prepared the paper with sizing.
4. The artist provided the designsfor instance, in the form of brush drawings.
5. Carvers then carved the block.
6. The artist then indicated the colors for the prints and the carver cut each sheet on a separate block.

Answer: The artist uses a knife or chisel to gouge or cut away the parts that are to print white.
