Answer to Question 1

Answer: a

Answer to Question 2

Answer: The ideal answer should include:
1. Pollock wanted to be completely absorbed in the work of painting. He felt the painting had a life of its own and his goal was to let it come through, so he submerged himself in the work.
2. He worked on a large scale. He put the canvas on the floor and stood over it, walking around it as he painted. He wanted to make energy and motion visible.
3. His paintings comprise a complex web of line and drips that engages the viewer.
4. His works have been called action paintings because the paint he dripped from above the canvas recorded his movements and gestures. His technique has been compared to a dance around the canvas.
