An outline (1) encourages brevity and accuracy, (2) permits concentration on one phase at a time, (4) saves time in writing, (5) provides a psychological lift, and (6) facilitates emphasis and de-emphasis.

Guidelines include asking the following questions: (1) Is the information stated as truthfully, honestly, and fairly as possible? (2) Are the ideas expressed clearly and understandably? (3) Are unpleasant ideas stated tactfully and positively to preserve the receiver's self-worth and to build future relationships? (4) Does the message embellish or exaggerate the facts? (5) Is your viewpoint supported with objective facts? (6) Are graphics carefully designed to avoid distorting facts and relationships?
